Maple Sky/Passing Storm – finished

Passing Storm – 24 x 30 – Acrylic on Wood

Here’s the final painting. The storm has passed leaving this Maple mostly unscathed. The sun is coming out and is lighting up some of the surviving leaves. It’s still windy as the dark clouds move off in the distance, but this tree will retain its fall splendor for another day.

There. I’ve darkened and blued the background a bit and I am much happier with it now. One more session and I should be done. Which is good, because the next painting is waiting for me – not that I’m not enjoying this one, because I am!

I’ve started on the last section of this painting – the background. I think it’s a little to warm and too light, so I’m going to do some more work on it next session. I do like the way the shapes have come about though.

I’m also starting to think about a new title for it. Possibly ‘Passing Storm’ but I’m not sure yet.

Still working away . I’ve put in the trunks and lower branches, just continuing to make the shapes – although at this point they pretty much make themselves. Next week I’ll post some background for sure!

I’m so pleased with the way it’s going that I hope to finish it in time to enter into a local show before I let it go.

I’ve finished the sky – yay! The clouds are moving briskly and some leaves have been blown off the tree by the passing storm. Next up is the rest of the maple and the surrounding trees.

I have almost finished the tree! (I still have some of the lower part of the tree as it intertwines with the the background.) A few leaves have left the tree and there is a hint of light coming back after the storm. I just need to do the rest of the swiftly moving clouds and then I can turn my attention to the rest of the forest.

I’m working on finishing the tree and sky before I tackle the background foliage. The tree in shadow is done and now I need to do those last leaves with the sunlight on them. And then the roiling clouds. I’ll be curious to see the background as it will have some greens that I hope will be a nice counterpoint to all the reds.

Now you can see more of the dark storm clouds. I’m still working on the side of the Maple that’s in shadow. I like the movement I’m getting with this one. The leaves are restless, shifting and defining their positions as their reprieve sinks in. The clouds are rolling away in search of another victim.

You can start to see some of the dark storm clouds off in the distance. Fortunately for this maple the storm has passed by leaving little damage. It may be the next fall storm that strips the tree of its leaves, but for now, colours saturated from the rains and leaves sparkling in the afternoon light, the maple stands resplendent in crimson, orange and purple.

I’m working some more on the dark side of the tree. I want to get to the right hand side of the painting where the clouds and leaves are darker. 24 x 30 used to feel so big, but lately it’s been feeling a little cramped.
