Carmen – WIP2

Carmen

18 x 36 – Acrylic on Wood

Feeling my way along this one. I’m relying much less on my original sketch. I’m using it for a sort of high-level map, but the details – the specific shapes and colours – are going to come more from the painting itself on this one I think, (although they always do to some extent). Which is kind of cool and scary at the same time. What if I start painting without any preliminary work at all?  Nah, it’ll never happen  – I enjoy making the sketches, working out some of the challenges, trying some things, taking chances – it makes me feel a little more confident when I’m actually slinging paint. :)

A long time coming, this painting embraces red. A red maple with light shining through the leaves in yellow, pink and orange, and shadows clinging to the trunk and hiding where they can in burgandy and purple.  It’s quite a different palette for me – although every painting has it’s own unique colours – so I am very excited to see where this one leads! :)

The River – Complete

The River

36 x 48 – Acrylic on Wood

Placidly implacable, the river meanders through an autumn day.

The sky is done; The River is done. :) This one was a long time playing with muted fall colours (and thoroughly enjoyable too) and now I’m ready for something a little stronger. So my next painting will be red – lots and lots of red. :) And a little bit smaller. With maybe some 5 x 7’s in first.

We’ll be getting snow soon, and then it will be time to go out looking for winter inspiration. Not as delightful to me as fall, but I do plan to tackle more winter paintings this season. I’ll find those pockets of sparkling colour and rich shadow that the light brings about and wrest a painting or two from it. :)

I’ve finished everything about The River but the sky. It will echo the water and bracket the trees – everything a sky should do. :)

We had some more beautiful fall weather this week. The leaves have mostly fallen and those left are more bronze and sienna than the brighter colours of September/October. I’m looking at some more muted colours and starker landscapes and I think a less saturated palette might be fun to explore – at least for a painting or two! :)

I have nearly finished the forest across the river, just a bit more of the sun-kissed trees at the back and I will be moving on to the sky!
