Irises – WIP4

Irises

11 x 14 – Acrylic on Wood

I’ve completed the little bundle of flowers in the centre and have a very good sense of how the stems want to be. Everything is keeping a gentle motion – the background shapes echoing the flowers and the yellows and purples providing the contrast I’m looking for. :)

I’m finding it difficult to get a good photo of this painting. The purples should be dark and rich and the yellows soft and delicate.  I think this one is a lot closer to what I see on my easel than the first two are.

And it’s coming forth as a quiet undulation of flowers – a gentle reaching upward and of constant movement.

Not the painting I thought I would be starting – my river sketch isn’t ready for the panel yet. :) But this is one I’ve been wanting to do for a while so I don’t mind.

Purple, mauve, violet, lavender, plum, wine, magenta, all against a backdrop of muted and not-so-muted yellows – definite homage to a certain dutchman.  Although every time I get lost in a perfect red or see a jewel in a puddle of turquoise I think of the artists that came before and of those yet to come so in a sense every time I pick up a brush, it’s a tribute.
