Maple Sky – wip5

I’m working some more on the dark side of the tree. I want to get to the right hand side of the painting where the clouds and leaves are darker.  24 x 30 used to feel so big, but lately it’s been feeling a little cramped. :)

  1. Just as an earlier person commented, I have also admired you on etsy. I absolutely love your paintings and they remind me so much of Chuck Close’s. I have to ask you the burning question of how you make the sketches? How do you begin to create those? They are amazing in and of themselves!

Thanks Jenny! I love Chuck Close – the portrait as an abstract landscape! :)

I start with photos and sketches (and sometimes just a colour palette – lol) I try to pull out the main shapes and also the type of shape (softer or more angular for example) and I refine the sketch a few times until I get the balance between abstract and realism that I am looking for.

After the sketch has been transferred to the panel I use it more as a general guide to help me if I get lost. Once I start actually painting shapes the shapes themselves dictate the way the painting will go. Sometimes the finished painting is very far removed from the final sketch. :)
